Modex Broadband

Broadband bass trap with performance between 50 Hz and 5000 Hz

RPG Modex Broadband is a high efficient bass trap that works in a very wide frequency area despite having a shallow profile. Perfect to place on walls or corners where one does not want something to build much out. Can also be ceiling mounted.

Performance and design:
RPG reports a performance from 50-5000 Hz.

Looking at the measurements (measured independently by the Fraunhoder institute), we see that Modex Broadband is first and foremost highly effective between 70-4000 Hz. Below and above that the performance is less but still decent. Take notice that these measurements are trustworthy compared to what’s often common in the industry of bass absorbents. They are measured by impedance tube, which is a highly accurate measuring method for low frequencies.

Traditional porous material become ineffective at low frequencies and needs a significant surface depth and size to work well because the velocity of sound is zero at the surface. This steals valuable space in the room and makes the room sound less spacious.

RPG developed its Modex Plate to address these problems. However, in addition to low frequency modal control, rooms also require mid and high frequency reflection control as well. Modex Broadband complements the Modex Plate. The Modex Broadband was developed by the Institute for Building Physics at the Fraunhofer Institute, and consists of a metal plate, embedded between two layers of damping material, surrounded by a perforated metal frame. The Modex Broadband offers broadband absorption effective from 50 – 5000 Hz in a thickness of only 11 cm.

Considering the broad bandwidth of Modex Broadband, it can be mounted many places where broad frequency effect is needed. For treating room modes, placement needs to be where the pressure of these frequencies are high, and measurements before and after installation is necessary for the best result.

Dimension and weight:
1500 mm (height) x 100 mm (width) x110 mm (depth)
Modex Broadband can also be mounted vertically (landscape)
Weight: 32 kg

Note that installation requires two persons. The integrated wall bracket needs to be attached securely to the wall/studs. The Modex Broadband is then lifted on to the bracket.

When there’s a mopboard/baseboard, we still recommend to mount Modex Broadband so it touches the floor. The reason is because the pressure is high where the surfaces meet, thus placing it above can compromise some performance. An option here to use a plywood panel behind the Modex Broadband to fill in the air gap.
